Getting the right measurements is the difference between a door that glides and one that sticks. Here's the simple way to do it.
Width: Measure the opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the minimum measurement. That's your door width.
Height: Measure the left, middle, and right side. Again, use the minimum measurement.
Check plumb and level: Put a level on the side jambs and the header. If it's off, fix it before you install. A crooked opening means a crooked door.
Clearance: You need a few inches on each side for the hardware and for the door to slide. Top clearance for the track and hangers. Bottom clearance about 1/2 to 3/4 inch so the door doesn't rub the floor.
Door thickness: Make sure your opening can fit the door you picked. Measure it.
If you're doing a bypass setup-two doors that slide past each other-you'll measure differently. Check our Bypass Barn Door Hardware Kit for that.
For a dining room divider, a sliding hanging room divider works great. See our Sliding Hanging Room Dividers for Dining Room.
Need specific hardware? Our 48 Barn Door Hardware has options.
