The edges are the weakest point. We cover them with foam or rubber edge protectors. Then each piece gets wrapped in bubble wrap or foam sheets. After that, we label everything clearly – size, type, destination. Sounds basic, but it saves a ton of confusion at the other end.
Packaging that actually protects
For large or heavy pieces, we use wooden crates. They're sturdy and take the abuse of loading and unloading. For multiple smaller pieces, we stack them on pallets – stable, easy to move with a forklift.
Corner protectors go on every sharp edge. And we stretch‑wrap the whole stack tight to the pallet so nothing shifts.
Loading and securing
We never hand‑carry large glass if we can avoid it. Forklift or pallet jack every time. When stacking, we keep it low and even – no leaning stacks.
Once the glass is on the truck, we strap it down firmly. Then we put foam or rubber padding between the glass and the vehicle walls to absorb vibration. Glass hates vibration.
Picking the right truck
Not every truck is suitable. We look for:
• Size and capacity – has to fit the order and handle the weight.
• Good suspension – smooth ride = less shock.
• Climate control – some glass, like laminated, doesn't like extreme heat or moisture.
• Security – locks, alarms. Glass is valuable and easy to steal.
Work with a pro transport company
Honestly, I don't do this alone. I use transport companies that specialize in glass. They know how to pack, load, and drive carefully. They also carry insurance – if something breaks, it's covered. And they give me tracking so I know where the shipment is at all times.
One last tip
Always add a little extra padding around the edges. That's where 90% of breakage happens. A few extra cents in foam beats a whole broken pane.
