How to Lock a Barn Door Latch (Told by Someone Who's Done It a Few Times)

I sell bulk barn door latches. And every week, someone asks me: "How do I actually lock this thing so it doesn't come loose?"
Fair question. Let me show you how I do it – no fancy talk, just what works.
Grab these first
• Screwdriver (check if your latch uses Phillips or flat)
• Tape measure
• Level (seriously, don't skip this)
• Pencil
That's all.

Step 1: Pick a spot
Most people put the Barn Door Latch near the top edge of the door or down by the bottom. I like the top – less chance of bumping into it. Hold the latch where you want it. Use the level to make sure it's straight. Trust me, a crooked latch feels awful every time you use it.
Step 2: Mark and drill
Trace the screw holes with your pencil. Then drill pilot holes – a bit smaller than the screws. This keeps the wood from cracking. I learned that the hard way on my first barn door.
Step 3: Screw it on
Line up the latch and drive the screws in. Don't over‑tighten or you'll strip the wood. Double‑check with your level again.
Step 4: The strike plate goes on the frame
Close the door and see where the latch touches the frame. That's where the strike plate lives. Mark, drill pilot holes, screw it on. If the latch doesn't catch cleanly, move the strike plate up or down a tiny bit. Sometimes it takes two tries.
Step 5: Test it
Lock and unlock a few times. It should feel solid but not sticky. If it's gritty, spray a little silicone lube on the moving parts. Works like magic.
One thing nobody tells you
Cheap latches have thin metal that bends. Our bulk barn door latches are thicker – they don't get bent out of shape when you actually use them. Worth paying a few extra bucks.
While you're at it – don't forget handles
If you're putting together a barn door, you'll need something to grab. Our Back to Back Sliding Door Pull Ladder Handles are great because you can pull from both sides. No more awkward hand positions.
And if you want a super clean look – nothing sticking out – try our Recessed Door Flush Pull Handles. They sit inside the edge of the door. Modern, simple, and your knuckles won't hit the wall.
Bottom line
Locking a Barn Door Latch takes maybe ten minutes. Measure straight, drill pilot holes, and test it. That's really it.
If you're buying in bulk or just need one latch – or you're curious about Back to Back Sliding Door Pull Ladder Handles or Recessed Door Flush Pull Handles – just drop me a line. I've helped a lot of people get it right. Happy to help you too.
