I sell bulk barn door sets for a living. And almost every week, someone asks me: "Can I get these in a color that's not on your list?"
Short answer: yes. But let me give you the real answer, not the sales pitch.
Yes, but there's a catch
We can match just about any color you want – paint codes, swatches, even a photo from your phone. I've done everything from matte black to mirror gold (yes, really) to a color that matched someone's weird 1970s orange cabinets.
But here's what most people don't think about: the finish matters more than the color. A cheap coating on a barn door system will chip in six months. So when you ask for custom color, we don't just spray whatever. We just use electroplating to put whatever color you want right on top."
Cost goes up a bit. Not crazy, but it's there. Why? Because we have to stop the line, mix the color, and test it. Also, small orders (under 10 doors) are harder to justify. If you're buying bulk, it's way easier on the wallet.
Also, lead time stretches. Standard barn door sets ship in a week. Custom color? Two to three weeks usually.
A quick example
Last month, a contractor ordered 24 barn door kits for a hotel renovation. They wanted the doors to match the hallway walls – a specific deep brown. We matched it, no problem. That's the kind of thing you don't learn from a template.
What about hardware?
Honestly, I wouldn't overthink matching hardware to the door color. Just pick a neutral track finish – black, brushed nickel, or mirror silver. Let the door be the star. We have inexpensive barn door hardware kit options that work fine with custom colors.
One more thing – outdoor use
If you want custom-colored barn door system parts for an outdoor patio or shed, you need UV‑resistant paint. Standard interior colors will fade in a summer. We can do it, but make sure to ask specifically for outdoor-rated finish.
So, should you do it?
If you have a specific color in mind and you're ordering in bulk – yeah, go for it. If you just want something "different" but don't have a strong vision, stick with our standard barn door sets. They already come in six or seven colors that work for 90% of people.
Bottom line: custom colors are real, they work, but they're not magic. Give me a call, send a swatch, and I'll tell you straight if it's worth it.
